Chilli pepper
Nigeria is a major producer of Chilli Pepper in Africa, contributing significantly to the continent’s total output. Over the decade, production of Chilli Peppers in Nigeria increased from 54,000 tonnes in 2009 to 71,917 tonnes in 2019, growing at an average annual rate of 1.53%. It is predominantly produced in Northern Nigeria. Northern Nigeria is home to extensive farmland steeped in the cultivation of mostly organic chilli pepper under natural conditions. The natural features of these regions, especially the presence of flood-prone plains and river basins and above all the development of vast irrigated lands, create conditions that greatly favour the development of this crop.
Over the years, chilli pepper production in Nigeria has increased steadily despite economic, social and security challenges.
